Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and Taking Bold Steps
For as long as I can remember, I’ve battled that quiet (and sometimes not-so-quiet) voice of doubt in my head. The one that asks, Who do you think you are? The one that makes me second-guess my own skills, achievements, and even my place in the spaces I’ve worked so hard to be in. Imposter syndrome is real, and if you’ve ever felt it, you know how insidious it can be. No matter how much experience or success you gain, it has a way of creeping in at the most inconvenient times.
In the design world, where creativity is deeply personal and often subject to scrutiny, that feeling can be especially strong. There have been moments when I’ve walked into a room full of talented professionals and felt like I didn’t belong—even after 20 years in this industry. But I’ve learned that imposter syndrome thrives in silence. The more we name it, the less power it has over us. And the best way to silence it? Action.
That’s why I’m challenging myself in a big way this season.
Enter: The One Room Challenge
This spring, I decided to push past doubt and step fully into my creative confidence by signing up for the One Room Challenge. If you’re not familiar, it’s a biannual design event where participants transform a space over eight weeks, documenting their progress along the way. It’s a chance to stretch creatively, share the process openly, and connect with a community of designers and home enthusiasts who are all tackling their own ambitious projects.
For my challenge, I’ve chosen to design my guest room from top to bottom, bringing to life an African Oasis theme. This room will be a complement to my African safari-inspired guest bathroom, and I want it to feel like a warm, welcoming retreat—one that tells a story of nature, artistry, and heritage.
My Goals for This Challenge
1. Celebrate My Heritage Through Design – I want this space to reflect African culture in a way that feels elevated, modern, and deeply personal. That means sourcing meaningful decor, rich textures, and earthy, grounding tones.
2. Push My Creativity – It’s easy to play it safe, but I’m challenging myself to take risks—whether it’s in color, pattern, or layering unexpected elements.
3. Share the Process – One thing imposter syndrome discourages is vulnerability. But I believe there’s power in showing the journey, not just the polished end result. I’ll be documenting my progress, challenges, and wins along the way.
4. Embrace the Community – The One Room Challenge is about more than just a room transformation; it’s about connecting with others who are just as passionate about design. I’m looking forward to learning from and being inspired by fellow participants.
I won’t pretend I don’t still hear that voice of doubt every now and then, but I’m choosing to move forward anyway. If imposter syndrome has ever held you back, I encourage you to take that bold step—whether it’s in design, business, or another passion. Sometimes, the only way to prove to yourself that you belong is to show up, do the work, and own your space unapologetically.
So here’s to overcoming self-doubt, embracing creativity, and bringing bold visions to life—one room at a time.
Stay tuned for my guest room transformation updates, and if you’re doing the One Room Challenge too, let’s cheer each other on!
